NDTV Greenathon -Review

NDTV network recently conducted a 24 hr continuous integrated telecast from various cities of india with citizen participation(public figures, and not so public figures alike) in cleaning up the environment and also strive to start a new green movement in India. People with some money power and who had the inclination were also invited to adopt villages and work for their infrastructural development. It was heartening to follow the events live on tv..all with images of citizens going ahead and literally cleaning up juhu beach and the very very very dirty yamuna banks.BTw, we need more stringent laws and application of laws associated with industrial and sewage effluent treatment prior to letting wastes into rivers..It was great to see that many villages are going to be part of this innovative solar powered lantern loan system as well. I for one didn't know that even in this day and time there are villages in India which have no access to electricity. The plan is to use solar power to charge these lanterns by day and then give these lanterns to villagers for use at night for a very nominal charge. It was heartening to see how villagers were gratified that they could actually read by lantern light in the night or that they don't need to cook in darkness or that they didn't need to close shop by twilight.

People from all over the country also donated money towards this project amongst other future projects. One could always go to the NDTV website and donate more money for future years.

Beautiful work, NDTV. For the first time, citizens could see environmental dreams being put into such large scale action.Btw, a group of indian students have invented a mobile phone that gets charged while you walk around..cool and cute idea.India has no dearth for brains, I say !

So many years ago, infact a good 18 yrs ago i vaguely remember a worldwide coordinated project similar to this that took place and was telecast on Doordarshan. It was called planet earth or good earth or something. As a kid, watching that program; forever changed me into this person that would never spit or litter on the streets and someone that tries to segregate garbage and some who composts biodegradable wastes.

Rain water harvesting and solar power harnessing is something that have been very dear to my heart. I was so impressed by the gobar gas project and the smokeless chulhas when i read about them in my science textbook in school ..

Speaking of the environment, I remember this program called 'TURNING POINT' that i watched as a child on sundays or saturdays..This program made me grow into a responsible and smart individual. It is a pity, this program is not telecast anymore.Wish NDTV or other channels try and bring this program back.Btw, how come none of the private cable channels ever have science magazines on their telecast schedule?.Sure, there is discovery channel, but come on, don't put all the responsibility on discovery channel to build awareness amongst the masses.NDTV has some kind of a gadget program (which i totally love for all the gizmos they talk about out each week) and they do rarely talk about new science projects from time to time,But we need more participation from all private cable channels esp the ones in local languages as well .

Anyways, Long rant.. If you missed the greenathon on tv , go to the ndtv website and search for greenathon.

Shall try to post a link from here too.
